The communal mill
The communal mill
The communal mill was situated on the foot of the cliff of the castle of Houffalize along the road to La Roche
Why communal ?
Because, in the Middle Ages, the lord of the region obliged the peasantry to grind their wheat in that mill on the condition of giving him a certain quantity of flour as milling dues
This water-mill was provided by a small canal.
This canal is an irrigation canal that was hollowed in the years 1230 in order to guarantee a constant water flow to the mill.
It starts in the Pré du Lion, goes under the « rue de Schaerbeek », passes along the « alley » and gives the driving force to the mill thanks to the difference of level.
Afterwards, the communal mill was used by the saw-mill Géradin.
